Meet Information Course Information Blacksburg Weather A group of Liberty women's cross country runners will race at the low-key Hokie Open, Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. The women's 4K is set for 5:10 p.m. at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on Virginia Tech's campus.
Weather Report Friday afternoon will be unseasonably warm in Blacksburg, with the temperature reaching well into the 70s. There is also a chance of late afternoon rain showers.
Who is Competing? Liberty's tentative list of competitors includes Kaitlyn Hutchins, Alyssa Karle, Kammi Kurtz, Hannah Scherlacher, Abigail Stanley, Alexis Taylor and Terrill Zentmeyer.
Checking Out the Course This will be the ninth straight year that Liberty has competed in at least one event at the mostly flat Buford Meredith Cross Country Course.
Lady Flames Kaitlyn Hutchins (2013 and 2014 Hokie Open), Alyssa Karle (2014 Hokie Open), Hannah Scherlacher (2014 Hokie Open), Alexis Taylor (2013 Hokie Open) and Terrill Zentmeyer (2013 Hokie Open) have all competed in previous races at Virginia Tech.
A Look Back at the Last Two Years Last season, seven Lady Flames competed at the Hokie Open on Nov. 7, 2014. Stephanie Buda led the way for Liberty, closing her career with a ninth-place finish in a 4K time of 15:53.4.
Current Lady Flames who raced that day included Alyssa Karle (11th place, 16:10.4), Kaitlyn Hutchins (13th, 16:37.3) and Hannah Scherlacher (14th, 16:39.5).
Alexis Taylor was Liberty's top finisher at the 2013 Hokie Open (Nov. 8, 2013), placing 13th in a 4K effort of 15:20.8. She was trailed by current teammates Lindsey Bray (14th place, 15:38.2), Terrill Zentmeyer (15th, 15:44.8) and Hutchins (20th, 16:13.6).
Busy Week Alyssa Karle, Kammi Kurtz and Terrill Zentmeyer will all be racing for the second time in seven days, after competing in the Big South Cross Country Championships in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday. They helped Liberty place third in the women's team standings.
All three recorded 5K personal-best times, paced by Karle's 18:50.85 for 19th place. Zentmeyer followed closely in 18:52.07 for 20th place, while Kurtz clocked 19:27.88 for the 41st spot.
Reaching the Finish Line Friday's Hokie Open will most likely be the final race of the 2015 season for each of Liberty's competitors there. The Flames and Lady Flames will be limited to seven entrants apiece at the 2015 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships, which are set for Nov. 13 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
