Lady Flames Head to South Carolina to Begin 2nd Half of Conference Play

Liberty (10-10, 5-2 Big South) opens the second half of the conference schedule with a weekend trip to South Carolina. The Lady Flames compete at Presbyterian (3-18, 1-6) on Friday before taking on Winthrop (8-14, 3-4) on Saturday.

The Lady Flames lead Presbyterian, 12-1, all-time, while holding a 28-18 advantage in the series against Winthrop. Liberty swept both the Blue Hose and the Eagles last October in the Vines Center.

Live stats and live video will be available for both of Liberty's matches this weekend. Live stats will appear courtesy of the respective athletics communications departments. Both matches will be available for viewing, free of charge, on the Big South Network.

Starting Rotation
1.   Liberty collected 101 digs in a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Friday, tying the team's program 25-point, rally-scoring record. The Lady Flames then saw their eight-match home winning streak end in a three-set loss to Coastal Carolina, Saturday.

2.   Margaret Latchford collected a program rally-scoring-record 38 digs on Oct. 9 at Campbell. She added 31 digs on Friday against Charleston Southern, giving her three 30-dig matches this season, all in conference play.

3.   Caroline Douglas scored a season-high 20 kills versus Charleston Southern. With 1,224 career kills, Douglas needs three more kills to pass former teammate Lillie Happel (2010-13) for 10th place in program history.

4.   Sophomore Anna Willey has posted double-doubles in six out of Liberty's seven conference matches so far this season. On Friday against Charleston Southern, she set a career high with 55 assists, while adding 12 digs.

5.   Redshirt senior Jade Vorster posted a season-high eight blocks on Friday. She is curently ranked 13th among active NCAA Division I volleyball players with 428 career blocks (221 at Hawai'i, 207 at Liberty).

6.   On Friday against CSU, Caroline Douglas, Haley Jeffcoat and Anna Willey all recorded double-doubles, the first time that three Lady Flames had double-doubles in the same match since Nov. 15, 2013 at UNC Asheville.

7.   Shane Pinder is Liberty's winningest volleyball head coach, at 218-159. He needs three more wins to take over third place in Big South history in career head coaching wins.

Weekend Recap
The Lady Flames extended their home winning streak to eight matches with a come-from-behind, 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Friday. Liberty then fell to defending conference champion Coastal Carolina, Saturday in a battle for first place.

Double-Doubles Abound
Three Lady Flames recorded double-doubles during a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern, Friday. Anna Willey recorded a career-high 55 assists and 12 digs, while Caroline Douglas (season-high 20 kills, 12 digs) and Haley Jeffcoat (11 kills, season-high 15 digs) also registered double-doubles.

The last time three Lady Flames recorded double-doubles in the same match was Nov. 15, 2013 at UNC Asheville, in Jade Craycraft, Lillie Happel and Douglas.

How Many Digs?
Liberty has posted the only two 100+-dig matches in conference play this season, collecting 101 digs against both UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern. The Lady Flames' 101 digs are the most by the team under the current 25-point scoring format.

In both 101-dig matches, five Lady Flames reached double figures in digs, with Margaret Latchford leading with 31 digs each time.

Dishing it Out
Sophomore Anna Willey has dished out at least 40 assists six times in seven Big South matches so far this season, while totaling six straight double-doubles in league play. She has topped 50 assists three times in league play, including a career-high 55 assists on Friday against Charleston Southern.

Willey ranks second in the Big South in assists per set, both overall (9.62) and in league play (11.00).

Moving on Up
With 1,224 career kills, Caroline Douglas needs just three kills to enter Liberty's all-time top 10 in career kills, passing former teammate Lillie Happel (2010-13). Nicki Scripko (2007-09) sits in ninth, at 1,240 career kills.

Head Coach Shane Pinder, Liberty's winningest volleyball coach at 218-159, needs three more wins to pass Chris Phillips (Liberty/Gardner-Webb) into third in coaching wins among Big South volleyball coaches all-time.

Blocking the Way
Jade Vorster posted a season-high eight blocks on Friday versus Charleston Southern. She has recorded 428 career blocks, with two years each at Hawai'i (221) and Liberty (207). She ranks 13th among all active NCAA Division I players in career blocks, and is the only active Division I player to record 200 blocks at two separate institutions.

Lady Flames Dig Deep for 3-2 Win at Campbell
Trailing, 6-1, in set five at Campbell on Oct. 9, Liberty rallied to win the set, 15-11. It was the largest fifth-set deficit that the Lady Flames have overcome in a win since trailing Radford, 6-1 in the fifth set of a 3-2 victory, Nov. 11, 2006.

Sophomore Margaret Latchford collected a program rally-scoring-record 38 digs at Campbell, breaking the previous record of 35, held by both Lara Bartolomeo (Oct. 16, 2004) and Kelly Haseman (Nov. 13, 2010).

20 Kills
After recording 10 20-kill matches last season, Caroline Douglas reached 20 kills for the first time this season, last Friday against Charleston Southern. For her career, Douglas has totaled 13 20-kill contests.

Hannah Weidner is the only other current Lady Flame to score 20 kills in a match, sending down 20 kills on Oct. 18, 2014 at Coastal Carolina.

First Time
Senior Haley Jeffcoat scored five kills during the fifth set on Oct. 3 against UNC Asheville, giving the outside hitter her first career double-double, with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Liberty vs. Presbyterian
Presbyterian (3-18, 1-6) won its conference opener, 3-1 over Charleston Southern on Sept. 25, but has lost seven straight matches since then. The Blue Hose also have posted wins over Fordham and Hampton this year. Junior Mikayla Register ranks eighth in the Big South with 3.78 digs per set and is fifth with 0.34 aces per set. Rachel Elshoff (2.07 kills per set) and Sierra Davis (2.08 kills per set) lead PC's attack.

Third-year head coach Korrinn Burgess has gone 24-56 at Presbyterian, after coaching Spartanburg Methodist to a 17-14 record in 2012.

Liberty holds a 12-1 record in the all-time series against Presbyterian College, and the Lady Flames have won each of the last nine meetings. The Blue Hose posted their only win over Liberty on Nov. 8, 2008 in Clinton, S.C., a 3-2 victory.

Last season, Liberty's Sirena Vorster sent down a career-high 14 kills in a 3-0 Liberty sweep of Presbyterian, Oct. 24 at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames extended their winning streak to 12 matches, as PC hit -.061.

Liberty vs. Winthrop
Winthrop (8-14, 3-4) has dropped its last three matches after getting off to a 3-1 start in conference play. The Eagles rank third in the Big South with 2.23 blocks per set. Lourdes Rosario, named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 5, ranks third in the conference with 3.20 kills per set. Two-time Big South Freshman of the Week Madilyn McCarty leads the Big South with 10.04 assists per set. Brianna Gray (1.03 per set) and Rachel Lenz (1.05) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the league in blocks.

Third-year head coach Bruce Atkinson is 45-39 while at Winthrop, and 178-81 in nine years as a collegiate coach, which includes three-year stints at Hawaii Hilo (69-14; 2007-09) and Towson (64-28; 2010-12).

Liberty is 28-18 all-time against Winthrop. Each of Liberty's last three matches against the Eagles at Winthrop Coliseum has lasted a full five sets. On Nov. 19, 2010, Liberty trailed Winthrop 2-0 before winning, 3-2, in the Big South semifinal. The Lady Flames defeated the Eagles, 3-2, on Oct. 21, 2011 at Winthrop. Winthrop rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Lady Flames, 3-2, on Oct. 26, 2013 in Rock Hill, S.C.

Liberty swept Winthrop, 3-0, on Oct. 25, 2014 at the Vines Center. Jade Vorster broke Loren Thomas' rally-scoring program record for single-season solo blocks in that match.

Halfway There
Halfway through the conference schedule, Liberty is third in the Big South, at 5-2. Coastal Carolina (7-0) is first, followed by High Point (6-1).

In Big South play, Liberty leads the conference with 19.14 digs per set, while holding opponents to a .186 hitting percentage.

Anna Willey leads all players with 11.21 assists in conference play, while Margaret Latchford (5.76) leads in digs per set.

Top of the List
Starting in the 2001 season, Liberty (2001, 07-08, 11-12) and Winthrop (2002-06) have combined to win 10 out of the last 14 Big South Volleyball Championships, with each program claiming five titles during that span.
