The Liberty men's tennis squad concluded Saturday's competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg, Va., by going 4-2 during the day. All six of the Flames contests were singles draws.
Sam Matheson and Egon Samaai each notched a win in the singles main draw round of 64 to advance to the round of 32 tomorrow. Matheson began by knocking Jose Manzano of Radford out of the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The New Zealand native will take on Michael Weindl of Old Dominion tomorrow in the round of 32.
Samaai responded with a victory of his own against Thomas Pecor of Navy. The South Africa native collected a 7-5 winner in the first set, then fell to Pecor in the second set by a score of 6-3. Samaai bounced back and ousted Pecor with a 6-4 final in the third set to secure the match. The Liberty senior will square off against Jaan Kononov of UMBC in the round of 32 tomorrow.
The remaining two singles victories for the Flames came in the back-draw matches. Diego Castano upended Sam Tayler of Radford in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Shortly after, Alex Poynter topped Maxi Branth of James Madison in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
"It's good to see the guys bounce back today and play good tennis," stated head coach Chris Johnson. "I think we have great team chemistry and that is key to getting back on track after a tough day."
The ITA Atlantic Regional will continue tomorrow beginning with doubles play at 9:30 a.m. Matheson and Samaai will begin the round of 32 following doubles competition.
