Sam Matheson continues to roll through the prequalifying draw of the ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla. The New Zealand native is 3-0 thus far through the prequalifying draw, marking the first player in program history to collect three wins and advance to the third day.
Matheson began the tournament with a straight-set victory over Oklahoma's Jon Milstead, 6-1, 6-3.
The junior then notched another two-set victory over Jack Heslin of Tennessee. Matheson battled back-and-forth in the first set, before pulling ahead of Heslin to win 6-4. The Liberty junior buckled down in the second set, cruising to a 6-1 victory to sweep Heslin and advance to the Round of 64.
Matheson faced his closest match of the tournament in the Round of 64 against Lamar's Michael Feucht. Matheson slipped in the first set 6-4, but bounced back in the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-3, to solidify his slot into the Round of 32.
"Sam continues to get it done in the prequalifying draw here at the All-Americans," stated Associate Head Coach Rich Benson. "Our goal was to make it through the prequalifying draw and then play someone ranked. Sam needs a few wins against ranked opponents in order to meet his goal of getting into the NCAA individual tournament this May. Sam's playing with a lot of confidence right now, plus his fitness level is pretty good. I think he's got a great shot at doing that this week."
Matheson will square off against Jefta Kecic of Western Michigan tomorrow in the Round of 32 at 8 a.m. with the winner advancing to the qualifying draw tomorrow afternoon.
Egon Samaai competed in the ITA All-American tournament, falling in the first round of the prequalifying draw to Dave Bacalla of Valparaiso. Bacalla ousted Samaai, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and advanced to the Round of 32 tomorrow.
