The Liberty men's tennis squad will compete in its second consecutive USTA Futures event of the fall, this time in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
In last week's USTA Futures event, the Flames were represented by Jason Burgess and newcomers: Ryker Heller, Eddie Gutierrez and Max Borcuti. Burgess collected Liberty's lone win of the tournament in the first round, ousting Kamil Sikorski, 6-1, 6-0.
Head coach Chris Johnson will be taking Sam Matheson and Alex Poynter to this weekend's tournament. The duo last competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Sept. 11-14. Matheson finished singles competition with a 2-1 record, including knocking off Georgia's blue chip player Emil Reinberg 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The USTA Futures tournament will begin Friday and conclude on Sunday. For this particular tournament, there is no consolation bracket to be played.
Following this weekend's tournament, Liberty will return to action on Oct. 2 with a split weekend. The Flames will be competing in both the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C., and the ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
