Liberty Wins 2014-15 Big South Institutional Sportsmanship Award

Liberty has been named the winner of the Big South Conference's annual Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2014-15 athletic season, the league announced Tuesday.  Liberty receives the honor for the second time in the award's 10-year history, after also earning the award during the 2011-12 academic year.

A total of seven Liberty athletics teams have received Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards during the 2014-15 athletic season, including men's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, volleyball women's soccer and men's tennis.

Additionally, Liberty volleyball earned its eighth Big South Team Sportsmanship Award, tying VMI football for the most sportsmanship awards won by one institution in a single sport in league history.

Liberty teams have now totaled 59 Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards since the award's inception in 2005-06, averaging nearly six awards per athletic year.

The overall winner is determined on a system that recognizes the highest percentage of the maximum points an institution is capable of receiving for each team award.  The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each conference championship.

"Sportsmanship and Fair Play are core values of the Big South Conference and its members," said Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander.  "The Institutional Sportsmanship Award is one of our most significant honors as it recognizes the institution that has most consistently upheld these values and conducted its athletics program in a sportsmanlike manner.  We congratulate Liberty and all the team winners for their outstanding year!"
