Liberty Continues Fall Slate at Rees Jones Invite

Fresh off a fourth-place finish at its season-opening event, Liberty's men's golf team will continue its fall schedule at the Rees Jones Invitational.

The three-day, 54-hole event will be contested at the Haig Point Golf Course in Daufuskie Island, S.C. (par 72, 7,380 yards) and gets underway on Sunday. This year's event is hosted by Kennesaw State.

The Flames have had success at this event historically, having won the event two out of the four times they previously participated in the tournament.

Liberty's pair of team titles at the Rees Jones Invitational account for two of the program's 24 NCAA Division I team tournament wins.

Liberty posted a winning score of 6-over par 870 (284-290-296) in 2012, claiming the title by a 24-stroke margin over East Carolina.

The Flames' Niklas Lindstrom, who is playing professionally on the Nordic Golf League, was the lone golfer in the 2012 63-man field to post a score in red figures. He won individual medalist honors with a 3-under par 213 (73-70-70).

The Flames shared the title in 2010 with Kennesaw State, posting a 38-over par 902 (308-295-299). Flames' All-America golfer Robert Karlsson, who is finishing up his second season on the Mackenzie Tour (PGA Tour Canada), was Liberty's leading golfer and finished in second place with a 4-over par 220 (73-74-73).

Liberty's starting five for this weekend's Rees Jones Invitational will be getting their first look at the Haig Point Golf Course after the Flames took a year off from competing in the event.

Head Coach Jeff Thomas will send the same lineup out that opened the season at the Rod Myers Invitational, last weekend, in Durham, N.C.

The Flames' lineup will feature sophomores Hutson Chandler, Michael DeMorat, Isaiah Logue and Payton Taylor, along with freshman Gabe Lench.

Logue led the Flames to their fourth place finish at the Rod Myers Invitational. The sophomore carded a 5-under par 211 (67-73-71), individually finishing in third place. For his efforts at the Duke hosted event, he was named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week following his third career top five finish.

The 10-team field at this year's Rees Jones Invitational will give the Flames a preview of next spring's Big South Men's Golf Championship. Five of the 10 teams in the field are Big South Conference programs (Campbell, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty and Winthrop).

Kennesaw State (No. 18), Charlotte (No. 41), Winthrop (No. 71) and Liberty (No. 79) are the top four teams in the field based upon last year's Golfstat final team rankings.

The three-day event will get under way on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. For the first day of play, Liberty will be paired with golfers from Coastal Carolina and Winthrop, heading off the No. 10 tee at 9:50 a.m. Live stats for the event will be provided by Golfstat.
