Liberty to Host VMI, Saturday

The Liberty Flames men's soccer team will welcome the VMI Keydets for a non-conference contest at Osborne Stadium, Saturday afternoon. Kickoff for the match between the Flames (1-3) and the Keydets (0-3) is scheduled for 2 p.m.

A Look at Liberty
The Flames will look to close out a string of three home games with a victory, Saturday.

Liberty (1-3) dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Marshall at Osborne Stadium, Tuesday evening. Playing a man down, the Flames rallied to send the contest to overtime on a goal by forward Sachem Wilson. However, the visiting Thundering Herd netted the game winner during the 105th minute of the second overtime period for the victory.

Five Flames have each scored a goal for the Flames, so far this season. Wilson joined fellow seniors Tyler Bullock, Tim Harbison and Blessing Tahuona with his first goal of the season, Tuesday.  Freshman Nico Bellarde has also netted a goal for Liberty. 

Midfielder Kurt Meyers leads the Flames with two assists. Forward Bay Kurtz, who found Wilson for a goal on Tuesday, and freshman midfielder Geovanny Murillo have also assisted on a marker this season.

Jeremy Lee has started all four matches in goal for Liberty. The redshirt junior made a season-high five saves, Tuesday against Marshall. Through four games, Lee has posted a 2.13 goals-against average.

The Flames are in their 15th season under the guidance of Head Coach Jeff Alder. Liberty is 139-104-23 under the Liberty alum.

A Look at VMI
The Keydets will come to Lynchburg looking for their first victory of 2015. Saturday's contest will be VMI's fourth straight road match to open its season.

The Keydets (0-3) fell at USC Upstate, 3-0, in their most recent outing, this past Tuesday. VMI had seven shots in the contest, but was unable to score a goal.

Midfielder Campbell Wood has the Keydets' lone goal of the season, scoring in VMI's season opener at Longwood. Defender Todd Johnson assisted on the marker.

2014 All-Southern Conference goalkeeper Alex Guerra has manned the VMI net during its first three games. The senior has recorded 23 saves this season and has a 2.67 goals-against average.

Jon Freeman is in his first season as head coach of the Keydets.

VMI, a former member of the Big South Conference, and Liberty will be 23rd meeting in the all-time series between the two teams. Liberty holds an 18-2-2 advantage in the series.

Change Announced for James Madison Match
James Madison has announced a schedule change to its match with Liberty next week in Harrisonburg, Va.

Instead of meeting on Sept. 19, the Flames and Dukes are now scheduled to square off at James Madison's University Park on Sept. 18.  Kickoff for the game is 7:30 p.m.

Flames News and Notes

  • Sachem Wilson's goal was the forward's first of the year. The senior has led the Flames in scoring in 2013 and 2014. Wilson enters Saturday's contest with 21 career goals.
  • Senior defender Tim Harbison has started every game of his Liberty career. The team captain has started 60 consecutive matches.
  • Saturday's match is the final contest of three straight home games for the Flames. Liberty has dropped the first two of the span to N.C. State and Marshall.
  • Liberty is 1-2 at Osborne Stadium, this season.  The Flames are scheduled to play nine games there in 2015.

A Look Ahead
After Saturday's contest, Liberty will embark on a three-game road swing, starting Tuesday. The Flames will travel to Washington, D.C. for a match against the Howard Bison. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
