The Liberty men's tennis squad opens its fall schedule when the Flames travel down to Athens, Ga., this weekend to take part in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships (SIC). The tournament will begin on Friday morning and will conclude Monday.
The Flames last competed in the SIC in the fall of 2013. An appearance in the semifinals of the Division II doubles bracket by Dillon Segur and Egon Samaai highlighted action for the Flames. Samaai also posted a strong showing in singles play, advancing to the quarterfinals in the Division III bracket. Overall, Liberty posted 10 singles victories and three doubles wins during the tournament.
10th year head coach Chris Johnson takes a new lineup down to the Peach State. With Samaai as the only remaining Flame to compete in the 2013 SIC, Johnson's returnees are Jason Burgess, David Bush, Diego Castano and Sam Matheson. Johnson also welcomes newcomers, Maxim Borcuti, Eddie Gutierrez, Ryker Heller and Alexander Poynter.
This year's SIC will feature 174 participants from 28 schools. Among those schools are SEC opponents: Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State. Clemson, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech line up the ACC opponents to appear in this weekend's tournament. Liberty is one of two Big South teams in the tournament, with the other being Winthrop.
