Will Shepherd and Sammy Taormina were named to 2015 All-Coastal Plain League first team.
Liberty outfielder Will Shepherd and infielder Sammy Taormina have been named to the 2015 All-Coastal Plain League.
Both Flames were named as first team members. Taormina, who played for the Gastonia Grizzlies this summer, was the team's third baseman, while Shepherd, who spent his second summer with Pennisula Pilots, was selected as an outfielder on the squad.
All 15 Coastal Plain League (CPL) clubs were represented on the 44-player squad, split in first and second teams. The summer league gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. The loop has teams located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Shepherd, who was named to the Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America team in August, led the CPL with 49 runs scored and was fourth with a .554 slugging percentage. In 45 games, the outfielder hit .325 with 26 RBI. The rising junior belted eight home runs, a triple and 12 doubles.
Shepherd was selected to play in the 2015 CPL All-Star Game. He also was named the CPL Player of the Week for the week ending June 18.
At Liberty this past spring, Shepherd, a sophomore, hit .235 with 18 RBI, 37 run scored and five home runs in 45 games
Taormina finished third in the CPL with a .358 batting average. A starter in the league's All-Star game, the third baseman drove in 35 runs and scored 33 in 44 games. He hit four home runs and had 14 doubles.
Taormina was named the CPL Player of the Week for the week ending June 29. He helped Gastonia claim West Division first half championship and qualify for the league's playoffs with a 17-11 record.
A redshirt sophomore this past spring at Liberty, Taormina hit .285 with 16 RBI, 12 runs scored and three home runs in 43 games.
