Liberty University Head Wrestling Coach Jesse Castro has announced the signing of T.J. Mitchell to a national letter of intent for the 2007-08 academic year.
"T.J. is an intense competitor," commented Castro. "The tougher the competition, the tougher T.J. wrestles. I believe he will adjust to the level of Division I competition quickly. He comes from a very competitive New Jersey program, and is solid academically."
Mitchell comes to Liberty out of Raritan High School in Hazlet, N.J., where the grappler posted a 107-25 career record (81.1 winning percentage).
Mitchell began his high school career tallying a 35-13 record during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Despite battling a broken leg, Mitchell still managed to post a second-place finish at the district level as a sophomore.
During his junior year, Mitchell recorded a 33-7 mark, which included a district title, a third-place finish at regionals and a qualification for the state tournament, where he posted two wins.
Mitchell capped off his senior year with a stellar 39-5 record, allowing him to become the first wrestler in Raritan history with more than 100 career victories. He finished second at both the district and regional tournaments and placed fifth at the state tournament.
"I chose Liberty for its academics, the opportunity to wrestle at the Division I level and the faith-based community," stated Mitchell.
