Golf Adds Pair of Top Ranked Players to Roster

Liberty Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Thomas has bolstered his roster for the upcoming 2015-16 with the addition of Michael DeMorat and Gabe Lench.

DeMorat is transferring to Liberty from Eastern Florida State College and will have three years of eligibility left for the Flames. He finished last year as the No. 2 ranked player in the country in the final Golfstat National Junior College Athletic Association player rankings.

Lench will continue his standout amateur career at Liberty and enters his freshman year as the No. 37 ranked player in the world in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings.

DeMorat and Lench will look to help the Flames during their first event of the fall season when Liberty travels to Durham, N.C., to compete in the Rod Myers Invitational. The 54-hole event is hosted by Duke at the Duke Golf Club on Sept. 12 and 13.

Michael DeMorat (Merritt Island, Fla./Home Schooled)

DeMorat comes to Liberty off an All-America freshman season at Eastern Florida State. Individually, he finished tied for second at the NJCAA National Championship, helping the Titans to a runner-up team finish at the event.

DeMorat earned first team All-America honors during Eastern Florida State's 13th consecutive appearance at the NJCAA National Championship. The Titans also won their second NJCAA District 4 title in the last three seasons.

Earlier this month, DeMorat reached the finals of the Florida Amateur Match Play Golf Championship at Turtle Creek Club in Tequesta, Fla.

The native of Merritt Island, Fla., also posted a top 20 finish this summer at the Southern Amateur in West Point, Fla., and finished in fourth place at the 98th Florida Amateur Men's Championship in Ocala, Fla.

Head Coach Jeff Thomas on DeMorat:
"I am excited to have Michael coming to Liberty this fall. He will be a good addition to our roster.  He has proven himself on the course and in the classroom. Michael has a strong game and has had a great summer in tournament play. I expect him to come in immediately and make big contributions for our team. He will help our team compete for a Big South title and postseason championships."

Gabe Lench (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School)

Lench joins Liberty's roster as one of the game's top ranked amateur golfers, as he is ranked No. 37 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings and the No. 3 ranked amateur golfer in the country by Golfweek.

Last February, Lench posted a 10-under par 206 at The Club at Carlton Wood's Fazio Course in The Woodlands, Texas, to capture the title at the 2015 AJGA CB&I Boys Championship by three strokes.

Previous champions at the AJGA CB&I Boys Championship include some of the top professional golfers on the PGA Tour: Jim Furyk (1987), David Duval (1989), Tiger Woods (1992), Rickie Fowler (2006) and Jordan Spieth (2011).

Lench also had a stellar season in 2014, posting three notable wins that elevated his amateur ranking quickly. He posted a one shot win at 2014 South Beach International Amateur in Miami Beach, Fla., the 14th ranked amateur tournament in the world.

Additionally, Lench won by two strokes at the 2014 Florida Amateur with a winning 6-under par 282 at Quail Valley Golf Club and Hawks Nest Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla.

Finally, Lench helped Lake Mary Prep win the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A State championship at Deer Island Country Club in Tavaras, Fla. Following the state title, Lench was named the Orlando Sentinel's Boys Golfer of the Year.

Head Coach Jeff Thomas on Lench:
"It is exciting to have Gabe join our program this fall. He has won at every level and has proven himself as one of the best amateur golfers in the world. He is a fun guy to be around and works very hard at his game. I am enthusiastic about his future and know God has brought him to Liberty with a purpose."
