Garrett Young is lone Flame to garner VaSID all-state honors in 2007.
Garrett Young has been named to the VaSID University Division All-State Baseball Second Team as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). This past season, Young led the Flames and finished among the Big South leaders in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, hits, runs scored, RBI and home runs. The 6-3, 225-lb., outfielder hit .389 with 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 46 RBI and 53 runs scored in 50 games. He also hit in 18-straight games, the longest hitting streak by a Liberty player this year, and capped his season by being named to the 2007 Big South All-Tournament team. Young, a native of Fountain Valley, Calif., was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 46th round of Major League Baseball's June amateur draft with the 1,364th pick overall. The junior completed his first season with the Flames in 2007 and was selected to the Big South all-conference second team. With the honor, Young stretches Liberty's streak to four-straight years where a member of the team has been named to the VaSID All-State team. Flames' all-time hits leader Phillip Laurent earned back-to-back honors in 2005 and 2006. Chad Miller and Michael Just joined Laurent with honors in 2006, and Jeremiah Boles started the current streak in 2004. Aaron Grijalva joined Laurent with honors in 2005 when he was an honorable mention selection. Behind the offensive spark of Young, the Flames went 36-25, finishing in third place in the Big South regular season before losing in the championship round of the Big South Championship to Coastal Carolina. Young serves as one of two Big South players honored on the VaSID team. Alex Gregory of Radford was named as the second team's third baseman. VMI, the other eligible school, had no honorees. Kellen Kulbacki, outfielder for James Madison was named Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season. Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor also earned Coach of the Year honors for the second-straight year. Additionally, Virginia's Jacob Thompson was chosen as the Pitcher of the Year and George Mason's Jason Bour was selected as the Rookie of the Year. 2007 VaSID University Division All-State Baseball Team VaSID All-State First Team C Jason Bour – George Mason 1B Joe Mahoney – Richmond 2B Chris Fournier – George Mason SS Sergio Miranda - VCU 3B Greg Sexton – William & Mary OF Brandon Guyer - Virginia OF Scott Krieger – George Mason OF Kellen Kulbacki – James Madison DH Greg Miclat – Virginia P Sean Doolittle – Virginia P Anthony Shawler – Old Dominion P Jacob Thompson -- Virginia VaSID All-State Second Team C Tim Park – William & Mary 1B Sean Doolittle – Virginia 2B David Adams – Virginia SS Davis Stoneburner – James Madison 3B Alex Gregory – Radford OF Robbie Bailey – Longwood OF Garrett Young – Liberty OF Mike Zahm – Old Dominion DH Tyler Childeress – Longwood P Luke Foss – Norfolk State P Dan Hudson – Old Dominion P Luke Pisker -- VCU Player of the Year Kellen Kulbacki, James Madison Pitcher of the Year Jacob Thompson, Virginia Rookie of the Year Jason Bour, George Mason Coach of the Year Brian O'Connor, Virginia
