AVCA Team Academic Award Recipients The Liberty volleyball team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence this week. The Lady Flames earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the fifth straight year.
A record number of 752 teams across the United States received the awards this year, eclipsing the previous mark of 676, set in 2014-15. The list encompasses teams at the high school and collegiate (indoor and sand) levels.
The AVCA Team Academic Award debuted in 1993, and honors volleyball programs that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 grade-point average on a 5.0 scale.
Liberty volleyball recorded a 3.43 overall cumulative GPA through the 2014-15 academic year. Liberty is one of seven Big South programs to garner the award this season, along with Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, High Point and Radford.
The Lady Flames, coached by Shane Pinder, were one of 146 NCAA Division I women's volleyball programs to receive the 2014-15 AVCA Team Academic Award. Division I programs made up 19.4 percent of the overall recipients this year.
Liberty has been honored with the Team Academic Award a total of six times, including each of the last five years in a row. The Lady Flames also made the listing for the 2001-02 academic campaign.
