Liberty outfielder Will Shepherd and infielder Sammy Taormina have been selected to play in the 2015 Coastal Plain League (CPL) All-Star Game, set for July 13 at Sparrow Stadium in Florence, S.C.

Taormina, who has been playing for the Gastonia Grizzlies this summer, will start at third baseman for the West squad. Shepherd, who is in his second summer with the Peninsula Pilots, will be a reserve for the East team.

The 17th CPL All-Star Game will feature representatives from the summer league's 15 teams located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.

A fan vote selected five players to each squad, while the rest of the players were chosen to the teams by a vote of head coaches, broadcasters and media representatives from each CPL team.

Currently, Taormina is third in the CPL and leads Gastonia in hitting with a .360 batting average. The third baseman also tops the Grizzlies with 25 RBIs and scored 17 runs in 27 games. He has 10 doubles and two home runs.

Taormina was named the CPL Player of the Week for the week ending June 29. He helped Gastonia claim West Division first half championship and qualify for the league's playoffs with a 17-11 record. The Grizzlies has started the second half with a 5-3 mark.

A redshirt sophomore this past spring at Liberty, Taormina hit .285 with 16 RBI, 12 runs scored and three home runs in 43 games.

Shepherd also is among this summer's CPL leaders. The outfielder entered the day tied for third in the league with 30 runs scored, while batting .316 with 12 RBI in 28 games for Peninsula. He has collected seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and 11 stolen bases.

Shepherd was selected the CPL Player of the Week for the week ending June 18. The Pilots went 15-10 during the loop's first half and are 3-4 in the second half.

At Liberty this past spring, Shepherd, a sophomore, hit .235 with 18 RBI, 37 run scored and five home runs in 45 games.
