Former Liberty pitcher Shawn Clowers has signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
A senior in 2015, Clowers posted a 9-4 record with a 3.80 ERA and one save over a career-high 71 innings during his final season in a Flames uniform. The left-hander appeared in a team-high 19 games and after being inserted in the starting rotation in midseason, made eight starts. He struck out a career-high 52 and walked 25. He finished the year second in the Big South in victories and was one of only five pitches in the conference to throw a shutout.
In 2014, Clowers set a single-season program record with a 0.83 ERA. He recorded a 9-0 mark over 54 1/3 innings in a team-high 23 appearances. He was one of 36 semifinalists for the Gregg Olson "Breakout" Player of the Year Award.
A four-year member of the Flames, the Axton, Va., native finished his Liberty career with a 20-5 record, two saves and 3.08 ERA. In 149 innings, he struck out 116 and walked 59.
Last week, Liberty had three players selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. Pitcher Jared Lyons, pitcher/outfielder Ashton Perritt and first baseman/catcher/ pitcher Alex Close were selected by major league teams.
