Chandler Ball and Tori Zavodny were both voted to the VaSID All-State University Division Softball second team.
Liberty redshirt junior pitcher Chandler Ball and freshman outfielder Tori Zavodny have been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Softball Team, as announced Friday. Ball and Zavodny were both voted to the second team.
Both Lady Flames received VaSID All-State honors for the first time. Ball is the first Liberty softball pitcher to appear on the All-State team since Kat Johnson in 2011. Zavodny's older sister, Katie, was a three-time member of the VaSID All-State team, from 2012-14.
Earlier this spring, Ball was named to the Big South All-Conference second team, while Zavodny earned honorable mention all-conference laurels in addition to making an appearance on the Big South All-Freshman Team.
A native of Warner Robins, Ga., Ball emerged as the staff ace this season. After missing a majority of the 2014 campaign due to injury, she went 20-11 with a 3.20 ERA this year. Her 20 wins were tied for the second most in a single season in program history. Ball finished first in the Big South with 44 appearances, while placing second in the conference with 20 wins and four shutouts. She won seven consecutive decisions in March, and was named Big South Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17.
Hailing from Concord, N.C., Zavodny made an immediate impact on the Lady Flames' lineup. She batted .307 while leading Liberty in runs scored (35), triples (3), homers (8), slugging percentage (.556), walks (28), on-base percentage (.418) and stolen bases (24 – tied). Zavodny ranked second in the Big South in both triples and stolen bases. Her four three-hit games were the most by a Lady Flame this year. She hit the first home run in Liberty Softball Stadium history, March 19 versus Rider.
No. 15 James Madison swept the major awards after going 48-10 and hosting an NCAA Regional. Dukes junior Jailyn Ford, two-time NFCA All-American and two-time VaSID Pitcher of the Year, was named 2015 VaSID Player of the Year. Teammate Megan Good, a 2015 NFCA All-America second-team selection, was voted both VaSID Pitcher of the Year and VaSID Rookie of the Year. JMU's head coach Mickey Dean was named VaSID Coach of the Year for the third year in a row.
