Liberty Athletics celebrated another highly successful year of academics, athletics and community service at the fourth annual FLAMESPY Award show on April 27.
After the show, Liberty Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with some of the evening's award winners, including Liberty men's soccer freshman midfielder/defender Jovanni Chavez, who took home the Male Rookie of the Year Award.
Chavez was named to the 2014 Big South All-Freshman team, as the Flames posted an 11-6-1 overall mark and a 6-3 record in Big South play. The midfielder saw action in all 18 of Liberty's contests, making 13 starts. He scored two goals, both game-winning markers, and assisted on two others.
Chavez netted the game-winning goal in his first collegiate game, leading Liberty to a 2-1 win over Bluefield on August 29. Later in the year, he netted a goal in a 4-0 win at Howard on September 23. The Longmont, Colo., native also assisted on two goals in the Flames 5-0 win at VMI on Sept. 2.
