Liberty Athletics celebrated another highly successful year of academics, athletics and community service at the fourth annual FLAMESPY Award show on April 27.
After the show, Liberty Flames Sports Network's Alan York had a chance to catch up with some of the evening's award winners, including senior field hockey and lacrosse player Mercedes Cox, who took home the Dr. Jerry Falwell Leadership Award.
Cox was one of six seniors this year on the field hockey squad, starting in 20 of the 22 contests this season. Cox helped lead the squad to a 14-8 overall record, including Liberty's third consecutive NorPac East Divison Championship. Cox led the Lady Flames to their first-ever NCAA tournament victory when Liberty defeated Richmond, 3-1, on Nov. 12 in the NCAA play-in game. Cox finished her career with 81 games played, ranking second in program history. The Manassas, Va., native also concluded her career as a Top 10 goal scorer in Liberty history with eight.
Cox made the leap to the lacrosse squad in the spring season, competing in goal for the head coach Kelly Nangle and the Lady Flames. Cox brought with her the leadership experience and what it takes to battle through the thick and thin of the season. Cox is a proud supporter on the sideline and she has helped see the Lady Flames to their first-ever Big South Championship finals game appearance.
