Lady Flames to Open Big South Tournament Against No. 5 Seed Charleston Southern

Tournament Bracket

Liberty has drawn the fourth seed for the upcoming 2015 Big South Softball Championship, to be held Thursday through Sunday in Buies Creek, N.C. The Lady Flames (28-28, 12-12 Big South) will compete against the defending tournament champion, fifth-seeded Charleston Southern (29-26, 11-12), Thursday at noon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

The Lady Flames have posted a 6-2 record all-time in conference tournament play against Charleston Southern. However, the Buccaneers posted a 14-3 victory over the Lady Flames in these teams' last postseason meeting, May 10, 2012 in Radford, Va.

Liberty won its regular-season series at CSU, 2-1, on April 11-12. Chandler Ball tossed a three-hitter in a 9-0 Liberty victory in game one of a doubleheader. The Buccaneers blanked the Lady Flames, 5-0, in the nightcap behind a six-hit effort by Jennifer Giles. Liberty secured the series victory by hitting four homers in a 10-7, come-from-behind victory on April 12, during which Liberty scored five seventh-inning runs.

The winner of Thursday's game between the Lady Flames and Buccaneers will face the winner of No. 1 seed Longwood and either No. 8 seed Radford or No. 9 seed Gardner-Webb, Friday at 2 p.m. The losing teams of the Liberty vs. Charleston Southern and Longwood vs. Radford/Gardner-Webb games will meet in an elimination game on Friday at 9 a.m.

Longwood posted a 20-4 record in conference play this year, earning the program's first-ever Big South regular-season championship. The Lancers won the Big South Softball Championship title in 2013, their first year in the league.

Two-time defending regular-season champion Coastal Carolina earned the second seed with a 16-7 Big South record. Winthrop went 9-1 over its last 10 conference games to finish 14-9 in Big South play and claim third place.

Liberty (12-12) made an eight-win improvement in league play over last season, good for the fourth seed. Charleston Southern followed in fifth, at 11-12, just ahead of sixth-place Presbyterian (10-12). Campbell (8-15) swept PC on the final weekend to earn the seventh seed. Eighth-seeded Radford (7-15) and No. 9 seed Gardner-Webb (6-18) round out the tournament field.
