With the Liberty men's tennis team looking to build on its successful spring season, Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Chris Johnson has announced the signing of Ivan Petrunin to a National Letter of Intent. Johnson adds Petrunin to the 2015 recruiting class alongside Eddie Gutierrez who was signed on Nov. 22, 2014.
Johnson aims to help rebuild the team with the signing of Petrunin and Gutierrez after losing two very successful seniors in Dillon Segur and Jorge Azuero. Segur and Azuero led the team to a record season, 6-2 in Big South action, while earning the No. 2 seed for the first time in program history.
Petrunin hails from Sochi, Russia, and is ranked No. 1 in his region. Petrunin was ranked as high as No. 8 in Russia in junior tennis, ranked as high as 366 in Tennis Europe and ranked as high as 1022 on the ITF circuit.
Petrunin is coached by Baranova Nina Alekseevna and was the winner of the Tennis Europe tournament in Sochi "Chernomorets Cup" in singles play.
Johnson on Signing Petrunin: "We are very excited that Ivan has chosen Liberty and he and his family are very excited as well! Ivan has a big tennis talent and is very motivated to take his game to the highest levels possible. We have some big goals for next year and I'm quite certain that Ivan will be a big part of helping us achieve them."
