Liberty Men's Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of Hansel Atencia to a national letter of intent to attend Liberty University for the 2015-16 academic year.
"Hansel is one of the rare pass-first guys that everyone loves playing alongside," McKay stated. "He's the epitome of the State Farm commercials [featuring Chris Paul] because of how much he loves the assist. We're excited to add a person of his character and ability. We look forward to his contribution to our program and its future."
Atenica (G, 5-10, 155, Grundy, Va.) recently completed his senior year at Mountain Mission School, averaging 8.5 points, 5.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game. A native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, Atenica suited up as the starting point guard for the U17 Colombian national team in the 2013 South America Championships, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. While playing for his home country, Atenica averaged 15.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.7 steals per contest.
"I am very excited for this great chance to study and play at Liberty," Atencia said. "It's been my dream to be able to play Division I basketball and now it is coming true. I want to thank my parents, my coaches and above all God for blessing me with this opportunity."
