For the third time this season, Liberty left-hander Jared Lyons has been tabbed the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week. Lyons was selected today for the honor for games played April 20-26.
Lyons turned in a dominating pitching performance, leading the Flames to a 5-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, Friday evening at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Lyons pitched his second shutout of the season, giving up one hit. The only hit Lyons allowed came on the first pitch of the contest. The left-hander moved to 7-1 on the year, striking out nine batters and walking three.
After walking a batter with one out in the second inning, Lyons retired 16 consecutive batters, before walking a batter in the seventh with two outs to break up the run. The Big South Conference ERA leader (1.44) did not allow a runner past second base until the ninth inning with two outs.
A senior from Yorktown, Va., Lyons also leads the Big South Conference with three complete games, two shutouts and with an opponent batting average of .181. The left-hander is second in the conference with 75 innings pitched and third in wins.
Lyons has previously been named the Big South Pitcher of the Week for April 30-March 6 and March 16-22.
Lyons and the rest of the Flames (28-16) host the James Madison Dukes, tomorrow evening at Liberty Baseball Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
