Golf Prepares to Defend Big South Title Next Week

No. 2 seed Liberty will look to defend its conference title next week, when the Flames travel to Ninety-Six, S.C., for the 2015 Big South Men's Golf Championship.

The three-day, 54-hole event will once again be contested at The Patriot Golf Club (par 72, 7,120 yards), Sunday through Tuesday.

The Patriot Golf Club is hosting the Big South Men's Golf Championship for the 10th time in 11 years. The course has hosted the event every year since 2008 in addition to 2005 and 2006.

The Flames have won three out of the last four conference titles, all of which came at The Patriot Golf Club. Last year, the Flames posted a winning score of 3-over par 867 (290-293-284), finishing five strokes ahead of Charleston Southern (872) and 11 shots clear of Coastal Carolina (878).

Only one member of Liberty's 2014 championship squad will tee it up for the Flames next week in senior Mathieu Fenasse. The remainder of Liberty's championship line-up will consist of four freshmen (Hutson Chandler, Adam Eineving, Isaiah Logue and Payton Taylor).

Fenasse has had success at the conference championship event, having posted a career 72.4 stroke average in three previous tournaments.

As a sophomore, Fenasse captured medalist honors, winning the individual tournament with a 5-under par 211 (75-70-66). Last year, Fenasse helped Liberty capture its third program title, finishing in sixth place with a 1-over par 217 (74-72-71).

Fenasse's first-place finish at the 2013 Big South Men's Golf Championship was the first of his career. The senior's second individual title came last weekend when the he finished in a six-way tie for first place at the Liberty Spring Invitational.

Fenasse, along with fellow teammate Isaiah Logue and four players from No. 10 Nebraska and No. 19 North Carolina, posted par on the first hole at Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, Va.

The senior then stuck his approach shot on the par-4, No. 2 hole (429 yards) within two feet and sunk his birdie putt to claim the individual title at Liberty's home event.

Following the win, Fenasse was named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week, his third such honor this season.

Logue was recognized for making the playoff on the heels of his 3-under par 213. He was named Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this spring and seventh time overall this season.

Fenasse ranks second in the Big South with a 72.55 season stroke average, while Logue leads all freshman and ranks eighth overall with a 72.83 season stroke average.

The remainder of Liberty's starting five at next week's Big South Championship will be Taylor, who has posted a 73.73 stroke average since transferring to Liberty from Wisconsin this spring, Eineving (76.20) and Chandler (77.38).

The event will get underway on Sunday when Liberty goes off the No. 1 tee at the Patriot Golf Club along with golfers from No. 1 seed Winthrop and No. 3 seed Radford. The top three seeded teams in the event will start play at 9:20 a.m.

Hole-by-hole live scoring will be available throughout the event via Golfstat. @LUGameDay (Liberty's Game Day Twitter account) will be on the course providing more in-depth coverage of Liberty's golfers as they seek to capture the program's fourth conference title.
