Khval and Yang Garner Big South Season Awards

Liberty's No. 1 doubles tandem of Brittany Yang and Maria Khval garnered inclusion on the Big South Conference Women's Tennis All-Conference doubles squad, as announced today by the league office. Khval was also named to the Big South Conference Women's Tennis All-Conference singles squad.

Additionally, Yang was named this year's Big South Conference Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year alongside Radford's Taylor Newman. Yang's accomplishment has also placed the Georgia native on the All-Academic squad for the third consecutive season.

Khval and Yang become the Lady Flames' seventh doubles pair to earn all-conference recognition. The duo finished the regular season with a 16-5 overall record, including a conference mark of 8-1. Khval and Yang competed from the No. 1 doubles position all season long.

Khval garners her first-ever all-conference singles honor after finished the regular season with a 13-4 record. Khval's 13 victories marked the second most singles wins this season for the Lady Flames.

The Belarus native posted a record of 8-2 in her final 10 regular season matches. Additionally, Khval collected a team-best seven conference wins this season. Khval recorded the majority of her wins from the No. 3 singles slot, finishing with a 7-1 overall mark.

Yang becomes the second Lady Flame named as the Scholar Athlete of the Year and the first since Jordan Jenkins during the 2010-11 season. The Georgia senior garners her third straight all-academic team honor, joining Brook Garman, Jordan Jenkins and Jonita Randolph as the only Lady Flames to be named to the all-academic squad three times in their respective careers.

Yang graduated in December, carrying a 4.0 GPA as a graphic design major. Yang is currently pursuing her master in fine arts in studio and digital arts. On the court, the senior tallied an 11-7 singles record and a 16-5 doubles mark.

Charleston Southern's Marketa Placha was voted the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Coastal Carolina's Catherine Hewitt was named this season's Big South Coach of the Year.

Mariana Humberg of Winthrop was voted the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year, while the league's sports information directors voted Yang and Radford's Taylor Newman as the Big South Women's Tennis Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year.

The 2015 Big South Women's Tennis Championship will begin tomorrow in Asheville, N.C. with a trio of first round matches. The No. 4 seed Lady Flames will conclude tomorrow's action with a 3 p.m. bout with No. 5 seed Campbell in the quarterfinal round.
