Directions to Poplar Grove Golf Course
Liberty will host its first stroke play tournament since 2009 when the Flames welcome 17 other teams to Poplar Grove Golf Course, Friday and Saturday, for the Liberty Spring Invitational.
The 54-hole event will be contested on the Sam Snead designed 18-hole course in Amherst, Va. (par 72, 7,059 yards), one of two home courses for Liberty.
The event is free and open to the public. Fans wishing to attend the event are encouraged to use the following directions to the course and park near the driving range (signage will be visible for parking instruction when entering the facility).
Play is scheduled to get underway on Friday at 8:30 a.m., beginning 36 continuous holes of play on Friday with a shotgun start. The final round is scheduled to get underway on Saturday at 9 a.m., sending teams off holes No. 1 (par 4, 384 yards) and No. 10 (471 yards).
The two-day event is Liberty's first home stroke-play tournament since the Flames hosted the Frank Landrey Invitational, Oct. 5-6, 2009, at the Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va. Liberty finished the Frank Landrey Invite in third place out of 14 teams.
The inaugural Liberty Spring Invitational features 17 other teams, including four top 100 teams (No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 19 North Carolina, No. 81 Liberty and No. 95 Radford).
The Flames will also get a chance to see four other Big South teams with Campbell, High Point, Longwood and Radford playing in this weekend's event. The next event on Liberty's schedule is the Big South Men's Golf Championship (April 19-21 – Ninety-Six, S.C.).
The Flames are slated to start senior Mathieu Fenasse and freshmen Hutson Chandler, Adam Eineving, Isaiah Logue and Payton Taylor this weekend.
Fenasse leads the Flames on the year with a 72.73 stroke average, a mark that ranks fifth in the Big South. The senior has four top 10 finishes in 10 events this season, but was forced to withdraw from Liberty's last event for medical reasons.
Liberty is coming off an eighth-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship where the Flames carded a 32-over par 884 (294-295-295) at the Vanderbilt hosted event.
Isaiah Logue led the Flames during the event, as the freshman finished tied for eighth place with a 1-over par 214 (69-74-71). Logue has been named Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Week four times this season and ranks 11th in the Big South with a 73.04 stroke average.
Payton Taylor, who transferred to Liberty from Wisconsin midway through this season, ranks third on the team with a 73.50 stroke average. Taylor finished the Mason Rudolph Championship tied for 17th place with a 6-over par 219 (74-73-72).
