Egon Samaai has been named the Big South Conference Player of the Week for matches played March 30-April 5. The announcement was made earlier this afternoon by the league office.
It is the second time in the last three weeks that Samaai has received the award and third time this season, as the South Africa native was announced the Big South Player of the Week on March 24 and March 11.
Samaai finished the week with a 4-0 record including the match-clinching victory in a 4-3 win over Campbell, Tuesday. With Liberty ahead, Samaai defeated Jonathan O'Neal in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 to notch the Flames' fourth Big South victory of the season.
Samaai and teammate Dillon Segur captured Liberty's lone doubles win on Thursday, defeating Winthrop's Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak, 8-6. With the Flames trailing the Eagles by a score of 2-0, the junior delivered Liberty's first point of the match with a three-set victory over Michael Chen, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. Samaai's victory sparked a 3-1 singles advantage in the final four matches, allowing Liberty to defeat Winthrop for the first time in program history in Rock Hill, S.C., 4-3.
Samaai and the Flames return to action tomorrow with a 4 p.m. showdown against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Liberty closes out its regular season on Friday when the Flames take on Radford in Liberty's regular season Big South finale at 3 p.m.
