Chandler Ball tossed her third shutout of the season, as Liberty downed Campbell, 4-0.
Redshirt junior Chandler Ball tossed a four-hit shutout, as Liberty blanked the host Campbell Camels, 4-0, Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Lady Flames improve to 14-15 on the season, including 3-1 in Big South play after winning game one of today's doubleheader. Campbell falls to 18-14, 1-5 in conference action.
Ball (10-5) tied her career high for victories, pitching her third shutout of the season. She allowed just four hits while striking out five and walking one. Ball is the first Lady Flame since Tiffani Smith in 2011 to toss three shutouts in a season.
Campbell sophomore Katie Baker (9-9) drew the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Senior Julia Callicutt pitched one inning, striking out two.
Liberty juniors Blair Lawrence and Mickey Loveridge both went 3-for-4, with Loveridge hitting a double and Lawrence stealing two bases. Senior Megan Robinson extended her hitting streak to 13 games, going 1-for-4 with two RBI, while freshman Tori Zavodny batted 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Four different Camels registered one hit apiece, as Liberty outhit Campbell, 11-4.
Loveridge led off the second inning with a single to left. Lawrence later hit a one-out single. Baker struck out senior Jamie Crisp, and got freshman Madi Clarke to ground out, keeping the game scoreless.
The Lady Flames got a leadoff baserunner in the top of the fourth when Loveridge singled to right. Lawrence hit an infield single and stole second. Baker got out of the jam with strikeouts of Crisp and Clarke.
Ball retired the first 11 batters she faced, before Jones reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Allen caught senior Stephanie Jones stealing for the third out.
The Lady Flames went ahead with a fifth-inning tally. Taylor led off by reaching on an error. After she stole second, Zavodny sent her to third with a groundout. Allen hit an RBI single, giving Liberty a 1-0 lead.
Ball pitched around a one-out walk during the Camels' fifth time at bat, as Allen caught freshman Karsen Leonhardt stealing and senior Camise Patterson fouled out.
Liberty added three runs during the top of the sixth, as Lawrence singled and swiped second with one out. After a groundout sent her to third, Clarke plated Lawrence with an RBI single. Freshman Alexia Taylor, Zavodny and Robinson all singled, with Robinson's hit plating two runs for a 4-0 advantage. Allen grounded out for the final out.
The Liberty right-hander carried a no-hitter until senior Brittany Bruce lined a single with two outs during the sixth. Senior Ericka Nesbitt followed with a single to left, and senior Kerstine Womack loaded the bases with an infield single. Ball got Jones to ground out, quelling the rally.
Freshman Melissa Tullar led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center. Ball retired the next three batters in a row, sealing the shutout.
