Caroline Douglas led Liberty in kills on Saturday at the Virginia Invitational
The Liberty volleyball team opened its 2015 spring schedule on Saturday, competing in an invitational hosted by Virginia at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va. The Lady Flames faced a pair of in-state foes, in James Madison and the host Virginia Cavaliers. This past fall, Liberty defeated both the Dukes and Cavaliers, but the Lady Flames fell, 2-1, to both opponents on Saturday. During the first match, Liberty tied Virginia with a 25-22 set-two victory, before the Cavaliers prevailed in the third set, 25-17 for the 2-1 win (25-19, 22-25, 25-17). Freshman Gabrielle Vess led the Lady Flames with eight kills, while redshirt junior Caroline Douglas (6-0-13) and junior Jade Vorster (6-1-11) both had six kills. Vorster paced Liberty with two blocks, while junior Caila Stapleton (15 assists, six digs) and freshman Anna Willey (10 assists) both reached double figures in assists. The Lady Flames took a 1-0 lead over James Madison after winning set one, 26-24. The Dukes rebounded to earn the next two set victories, 25-17 and 25-23. Douglas hit .384 with a team-high 12 kills and Jade Vorster scored nine kills at a .500 pace to go along with two blocks. Sophomore Kate Corson led the team with seven digs, while Stapleton dished out a team-high 18 assists. Willey totaled 12 assists and four kills, while freshman Sirena Vorster registered four kills and one block.
Liberty next competes in a tournament held by the Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club on Saturday in Virginia Beach.
