Liberty left-hander Jared Lyons fashioned a three-hit shutout, leading the Flames to a 3-0 victory over the Radford Highlanders, Sunday in a Big South Conference contest at RU Baseball Stadium.
Lyons handcuffed the Highlanders, allowing three baserunners in going the distance for the first time in his Liberty career. The Flames left-hander runs his record to 3-0, giving up three hits and striking out 10 to tie a career-high. He did not walk a batter.
Lyons was perfect through the first 5 2/3 innings, before a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth by Radford right fielder Aaron Scoville. He was the only Highlander Lyons allowed to reach second base in the contest.
Liberty center fielder Aaron Stroosma went 3-for-3 to record his first three-hit game at Liberty.
Liberty moves to 14-8 overall and 1-2 in Big South Conference play. Radford drops to 11-11 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
After both teams went scoreless through the first five innings, Liberty broke through for the contest's only runs in the top of the sixth. Stroosma singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Ashton Perritt. Right fielder Will Shepherd followed by lining a double down the left field line for a 1-0 advantage.
Two batters later, designated hitter Andrew Yacyk drew a two-out walk to put runners on the corners. Catcher Becker Sankey then dropped a two-run double into left-center field gap, giving Liberty what proved to be the final score of 3-0.
The three-run sixth was all Lyons needed, allowing the Highlanders only two baserunners the rest of the way in closing out the shutout.
Radford starting pitcher Mitchell MacKeith falls to 2-2. The left-hander, the first of three Highlanders to pitch in the contest, allowed three runs over six innings. He struck out four batters and walked one.
Liberty collected seven hits.
The Flames next return home to start a six-game homestand. Liberty will welcome the Duke Blue Devils to Liberty Baseball Stadium to begin the homestand, Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
