Liberty returns to action next week when the Flames travel to Aiken, S.C., to participate in the 2015 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
The 54-hole event, now in its 18th year of existence, will once again be contested at the historic Palmetto Golf Club (par 70, 6,671 yards). The two-day tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Monday, followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
The Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 by Thomas Hitchcock, who started with four holes where the course's current practice range and No. 16, 17 and 18 holes currently stand. The course is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States.
The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1895 and has held tournaments that were won by golfing legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.
The event is hosted by NCAA Division II powerhouse USC Aiken. The Pacers, who are currently ranked No. 4 in the country by Golfstat, have won back-to-back Peach Belt Conference titles and made 22 NCAA Division II Regional appearances.
This year's Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate field includes 18 teams, spotlighted by No. 8 South Carolina, No. 19 Virginia, No. 28 Kennesaw State, No. 33 Clemson and No. 43 Georgia Southern.
Clemson is the reigning event champion after firing a 15-over par 854 (281-290-283), last year. The Tigers finished two strokes ahead of Virginia (290-287-279-856) and 13 strokes clear of third-place South Carolina (289-290-288-867).
The Flames have participated in this event each of the last five seasons, including top five finishes four out of the last five years. Liberty has posted a 289.5 team stroke average the last five years at the course.
Liberty's most experienced golfer on the course will once again be senior Mathieu Fenasse. The native of Lias, France, has been a part of Liberty's starting five each of the last three tournaments and has posted a 71.9 career stroke average on the course.
Fenasse currently leads the Flames with a 73.56 stroke average this year and has posted a top 10 finish at the event the last two years. He finished tied for fifth place in 2014 with a 4-over par 214 (72-71-71) and tied for sixth place with a 2-over par 212 (70-70-72) in 2013.
Isaiah Logue, who has played the course during his junior golf days, ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 74.22 stroke average. The rookie has been named Big South Freshman of the Week three times this season.
Head Coach Jeff Thomas will round out the remainder of his starting five with fellow freshman golfers Adam Eineving (76.06), Wisconsin transfer Payton Taylor (77.00) and Hutson Chandler (78.75).
