Liberty Comeback Falls Short Against Richmond

Despite a second half run by the Lady Flames lacrosse squad, the Richmond Spiders held on to defeat Liberty, 13-10, Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.

The Lady Flames drop to 1-4, while Richmond advances to 2-3. With the loss, Liberty is 0-2 all-time against the Spiders and 1-1 against Atlantic 10 programs on the year.

Liberty wasted no time in scoring the game's first goal, netting a goal on the team's first shot. Sam Struss collected her 12th goal of the season to give the Lady Flames the early 1-0 advantage in the third minute of play.

Freshman standout Katy Pridemore extended the lead for the red and blue after netting her 12th goal of the campaign. Just three minutes after the Lady Flames struck first, co-captain Morgan Becker set up Pridemore for the clean look on net, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Spiders netted their first goal at the 18:03 mark to slice the lead in half with Charlett Stevenson collected her fourth goal on a free position attempt.

Pridemore netted a free position goal of her own with 11:08 left to play in the opening stanza to extend the lead back to two.

However, Richmond closed the half on a 6-1 run to take the 7-4 lead into the intermission. Liberty's final goal of the first half came from Kallie Britton who corralled her fourth goal of the season.

The Lady Flames struck first to open the second half, with Britton notching her second goal of the contest, following a Spiders' foul.

However, Richmond scored two unanswered goals, just thirty seconds apart from each other, to extend the lead to a game-high four goal differential at 9-5.

Redshirt senior and co-captain, Nina Dunay, scored a much needed goal for the red and blue with 23:12 left to play, cutting the lead again to three.

Richmond answered with a goal of their own to push its lead back to four with 20:59 left to play in the contest.

However, the Lady Flames did not go quietly, as they reeled off a 3-0 run to close the gap on the scoreboard to one. The spurt began when Struss netted a free position goal just 20 seconds after the Spiders' extended the lead. Struss' strike marked her 13th goal of the season.

Pridemore netted her third goal of the contest and eighth in the last two games with 19:22 left to play. Following a shot wide by Dunay, the Vero Beach, Fla., native seized her opportunity and weaved through a double team, ripping the ball into the back of the net to cap off her hat trick.

Following a Richmond timeout in hopes to cool off the Lady Flames, Paige Britton collected her first goal of the season to pull Liberty within one at 10-9.

However, the Lady Flames were not able to tie the contest as the Spiders finished the final 14 minutes on a 3-1 run for a 13-10 victory.

Liberty's final goal of the contest came from Struss. Her marker tied her Pridemore with 14 goals on the season and three goals during the game.

Juliann Elmer turned 15 shots away, bringing her total to 80 saves on the season despite falling to 1-4 between the pipes for the Lady Flames.
