Liberty redshirt junior Chandler Ball was named Big South Pitcher of the Week, Tuesday.
Following a week in which she threw a pair of shutouts, Liberty redshirt junior Chandler Ball has been named Big South Softball Pitcher of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Ball, a native of Warner Robins, Ga., earns her first career Big South Pitcher of the Week award. She is the first Lady Flame since Katrina Johnson on May 10, 2010 to be named Pitcher of the Week.
The Liberty right-hander went 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts and a .233 opponents' batting average in 22 2/3 innings pitched, as the Lady Flames went 3-2 at the Dot Richardson Invitational. She shut out both Cleveland State and UMass Lowell, for her second and third career shutouts.
She started the weekend with a four-hit shutout of Cleveland State, striking out six and walking six as Liberty downed the Vikings, 3-0. After allowing four earned runs in games against South Dakota State and Middle Tennessee on Saturday, she bounced back with a 2-0, four-hit shutout win over UMass Lowell on Sunday, during which she struck out four batters.
Ball is the first Lady Flame since 2011 to pitch multiple shutouts in the same season. She has posted a 3-2 record so far this year, with a team-high 32 strikeouts in 39 innings of work. Ball currently ranks ninth in program history with 239 career strikeouts.
The Lady Flames (4-5) take on the defending national champions for the second year in a row, facing No. 1/1 Florida on Friday as part of the Aquafina Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Liberty opens the weekend against Illinois State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, before taking on the host Gators at 6:15 p.m.
