Liberty men's tennis freshman David Bush has been named the Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Big South Conference, for matches played from Jan. 26-Feb. 1.
Bush, a native of Ashland, Ky., earns his first Freshman of the Week honor. He joins Diego Castano as the second Big South Freshman of the Week from Liberty thus far in the 2015 campaign.
Bush finished the week with a perfect 3-0 mark, including two doubles-clinching wins with teammate Sam Matheson.
Bush began the weekend with a doubles victory from the No. 2 spot against King College's Lennard Keswani and Seth Carelli, 6-3. The doubles victory was what the Flames needed to jump out on top, 1-0, over the visiting Tornado.
The Ashland, Ky., native then competed with Matheson in another doubles match, this time against Bluefield State's Jacob Carey and Ignacio Pulido. Liberty's dynamic duo successfully ousted the Blues' double tandem, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the red and blue. Following his doubles victory, Bush then competed from the No. 5 slot against Pulido, besting the Bluefield State competitor in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 10-7.
"It is nice to see David receive notice for his gritty play against King College and Bluefield State," stated assistant coach Rich Benson. "David has been playing well since his match against Virginia where he should have taken a set off of the Cavaliers at the No. 6 singles position. David continues to do well for us both on the court and in the classroom."
The Freshman of the Week looks to aid the Flames as they set out to take on Florida Atlantic tomorrow in Miami, Fla. Following tomorrow's match, Liberty will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Miami on Saturday.
