Lady Flames Roll Past Wildcats

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad improved to 4-1 for the first time in program history, thanks to a 6-1 victory over the Villanova Wildcats, Saturday indoors at the Sports Racket. Villanova falls to 0-2 to start the season.

For the fifth consecutive match, the Lady Flames claimed the doubles advantage, this time with a three-game sweep over the visiting Wildcats. Brittany Yang and Maria Khval improved to 4-0 as a duo with their 6-1 victory over Samantha Schafer and Victoria Martinez. The Liberty duo of Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong's record remains untarnished at 4-0, following their 6-0 victory over Kate Pettee and Linley Busby. Emily Groeneveld and Belen Rivera notched their first win as a doubles unit, besting Eliza Dordelman and Aphrah Brokaw, 6-1.
Crist quickly extended the lead to 2-0, besting Busby 6-0, 6-2 in singles. The Lilburn, Ga. native remains undefeated in singles play to begin the 2015 campaign with her win in the No. 4 spot.

Rivera notched her team-tying fourth singles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alexandra Krogius in the No. 1 position, extending the Lady Flames lead to 3-0.

Mariely Hassey sealed the victory for Liberty with a strong performance from the No. 2 spot, downing Martinez 6-2, 6-0 to remain undefeated from the No. 2 singles position.

The Lady Flames' Thong extended Liberty's lead to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pettee.

After Schafer bested Yang at the No. 3 spot, Mabe closed the contest with an 8-6 victory over Brokaw from the No. 6 slot.

"Belen and Mariely did a great job of leading our team from the top of the lineup and we picked up our level of doubles against Villanova," stated women's head coach Jeff Maren. "We still need to handle pressure better, but overall this was a successful day for our program."

The Lady Flames return to action on Feb. 7 when they travel to Akron, Ohio to take on NJIT at 9 a.m.
