The Liberty men's tennis squad opens its season this Friday with a pair of home matches at the Sports Racket. The Flames will square off against James Madison at noon, before turning their attention to the Eagles of Morehead State at 6 p.m.
Alan York of the Liberty Flames Sports Network had a chance to catch up with head coach Chris Johnson to discuss this weekend's matchups as well as what is to be expected this season from his team.
Live stats will be available for both home matches on LibertyFlames.com by clicking on the live stats link on the men's tennis schedule/results page. Fans can also follow the matches through periodic Twitter updates from @LUGameday.
Liberty is 4-13 all-time against the Dukes of James Madison, with the last matchup going in the Flames' favor by a score of 5-2 on March 13, 2014 at Hilton Head, S.C. James Madison, much like Liberty, is a young team. The Dukes have only two upperclassmen, Maxi Branth and Robert Stirling, both of whom are juniors.
The Flames will then take on Morehead State, a familiar foe for this Liberty squad. The two squads have played head-to-head once with the Flames coming out as the victor in a 6-1 win to open the 2014 season.
Liberty will look to Dillon Segur and Jorge Azuero, the team's co-captains and lone seniors, to guide the team throughout the season. Juniors Egon Samaai and Josiah Boda join Segur and Azuero as the only other returning players from the 2014 squad, with all four combining for a 29-29 singles record and a 36-23 doubles record. Texas A&M transfer Jason Burgess and Middle Tennessee State transfer Sam Matheson look to provide the Flames with more collegiate experience and firepower than before. Freshmen David Bush and Diego Castano also aim to contribute to the success this season.
