Liberty Field Hockey Head Coach Jodi Murphy has been selected as the 2014 4U Field Hockey/NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year as released by the NFHCA this afternoon. Murphy guided the team to a 14-8 record and its first-ever NCAA Tournament win this season, defeating Richmond, 3-1, on Nov. 12 at Liberty Field Hockey Field. The Lady Flames finished the season with a perfect 4-0 conference record for their third straight NorPac East Division title. For the second year in a row, Murphy led Liberty to the NorPac title, defeating then No. 4 Stanford, 1-0 on Nov. 8 in Stockton, Calif. The Lady Flames notched several key wins this season, including the program's first-ever victory over a Top 20 ACC opponent, upending then No. 12 Wake Forest, 2-1, on Sept. 19 at Liberty Field Hockey Field. Liberty followed that performance with another impressive win over a Top 20 ACC squad, defeating then No. 11 Louisville, 2-1, on Sept. 28 at Liberty Field Hockey Field.
The Lady Flames earned their second straight NCAA berth under the management of Murphy, after defeating Stanford in the NorPac Tournament Championship Game. After surpassing Richmond in the NCAA Play-In game, Liberty advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, squaring off against No. 1 seed North Carolina. The Lady Flames nearly pulled off the upset in Chapel Hill, N.C., falling to the Tar Heels by a score of 2-1 to conclude the season.
On Oct. 28 the Lady Flames defeated Georgetown, 7-0, for the 50th win in program history. Murphy holds a 53-30 record in her four years as the program's head coach.
