Throughout the 2014 football season, LFSN Game On reporter Alan York will take a weekly look inside Liberty's football program in a segment called "Between the Lines."
During this week's segment, York looks at the strong play of Liberty's defensive line, one of the units that helped the Flames open up Big South play with a shutout win over Gardner-Webb, last Saturday. Liberty's front four have been the catalyst for helping Liberty post two shutouts in the same season since 2008.
Earlier this year, Liberty evened its record to 1-1 with a 17-0 road victory at Norfolk State. The Flames' defensive line was honored as a group as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week following the outing where they combined for 26 tackles, including nine solo and 17 assisted stops. The group was also responsible for all six of the Flames' sacks during the game, plus eight of the team's 11 tackles for a loss.
During Liberty's 34-0 blanking of Gardner-Webb last week, Liberty's defensive line posted similar numbers to jumpstart Liberty's Big South schedule. The group finished the contest with 17 total tackles, all five of Liberty's sacks, eight tackles for a loss, a fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries. Junior Chima Uzowihe individually finished the game with four tackles, including 2.5 sacks, and was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week.
During this week's segment, York talks with Flames' defensive line coach Vantz Singletary, along with some of his standout stars on the defensive line: Dominique Davis, JaRon Greene, Toby Onyechi and Uzowihe.
