Scott Sutarik has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year
Liberty goalkeeper Scott Sutarik has been named the Big South Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 20-26.
Sutarik, a senior from Palatine, Ill., started the week off with a 1-0 win at Longwood, last Wednesday. He faced 16 shots by the Lancers and made three saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season.
The clean sheet moved the senior into third on the program's career list with 20 shutouts. He is one shy of tying George Nimo (1987-90) for second on Liberty's all-time list.
Sutarik followed that effort by leading a strong defensive effort by the Flames in a 3-1 win over UNC Asheville, this past Saturday.
The honor is his second Big South Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season and the third of his career. Sutarik received the honor for the week ending Sept. 8 last season after a 4-0 win over IUPUI.
Sutarik and Liberty travel to Raleigh, N.C., for their final non-conference match of the 2014 regular season this evening. The Flames will face the N.C. State Wolfpack at Dial Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
