For the second year in a row, Liberty shut out Gardner-Webb, allowing the Flames to open Big South play with a 34-0 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday.
Liberty's defense showcased its strengths in the game, holding Gardner-Webb to 56 total offensive yards on 55 plays. The Runnin' Bulldogs went into the locker room at halftime with -11 yards on 23 plays and did not reach positive total yardage for the game until midway through the third quarter.
The game was played in front of 20,217 fans, the second-largest crowd in Williams Stadium history (largest was three weeks prior for Liberty's Homecoming game against Richmond – 20,838).
D.J. Abnar became the first Flame since current NFL running back Rashad Jennings (N.Y. Giants) to post three consecutive 100-yard rushing performance. The junior finished the game with 27 carries for 137 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Chima Uzowihe was Liberty's standout defensive star, finishing the game with four tackles, including 2.5 sacks. His sack total allowed the junior to move into fifth place on Liberty's career sacks list (15.0).
