Liberty to Face Longwood in Big South Match, Wednesday

The Liberty Flames men's soccer team will travel up Route 460 to Farmville, Va., for a Big South Conference contest against the Longwood Lancers, Wednesday.  Match time at the Longwood Athletics Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Liberty will enter the contest with a 1-3 Big South record and a 6-4-1 overall mark.  Host Longwood will bring a 2-3 conference mark and a 3-8-1 overall record into the contest.

A Look at Liberty
Wednesday's contest will be the fifth road contest of the year for Liberty (6-4-1, 1-3 Big South).  The Flames have posted a 2-2-1 mark in road contests this season.  Liberty won its last road contest at Gardner-Webb, 1-0, on Oct. 11.

In their latest outing, the Flames fell to No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 2-0, Saturday at Osborne Stadium.  Goalkeeper Scott Sutarik tied a season-high with six saves in the contest.

Through 11 games, Sutarik has posted a 1.16 goals-against average and a .735 save percentage.  He also has three shutouts this season.

The Flames enter the week having outscored their opponents, 20-13. Six different Flames have netted two or more goals each, while 10 different Liberty players have scored at least one goal in 2014. 

Sachem Wilson leads the Flames with four goals and eight points. Midfielder Tim Harbison is second with three goals, while Jovanni Chavez, Jamie Foxwell, Bay Kurtz and Khalil Karl have scored two goals apiece.

Liberty alumnus Jeff Alder is in his 14th season at the helm of the Flames. Liberty has posted a 133-96-23 mark during his tenure.

A Look at Longwood
After a slow start to the 2014 season, Longwood (3-8-1, 2-3 Big South) has won two-straight matches.  The Lancers defeated Campbell, 4-2, last Wednesday and won at Presbyterian, 4-1, Saturday.

Longwood has been outscored by its opponents, 28-18. However, the Lancers have scored four goals, a season-high, in each of its last two outings. Anthony Ugorji leads the Lancers with four goals, while Zach Crandall has netted three.

Goalkeeper Carlos Canas has posted a 2.22 goals-against average and a .635 save percentage this season. He has recorded one shutout.

Spreading the Wealth
Liberty has had 10 players score at least one goal this season. The Flames also have had six players net two or more goals. Liberty has outscored its opponents, 20-11, and enters the week 20th in the nation in goals scored per game. In addition, six different Flames have netted their first goal in a Liberty uniform in 2014.  Freshmen Alan Arellano, Jovanni Chavez, Bay Kurtz and Troy Reeves along with transfer Khalil Karl and junior defender Jamie Foxwell have all scored the first goal of their collegiate careers.

Flames Notes

  • Liberty is 4-2-1 away from Lynchburg, this season. Liberty is 2-2-1 in away games and 2-0 in neutral site contests.
  • The Flames have outscored its opponents, 13-8, away from Lynchburg.
  • Goalkeeper Scott Sutarik enters the week with 19 career shutouts. He is tied for third on Liberty's all-time list and is two away from tying George Nimo (1987-90) for second.
  • Expected to be in Liberty's starting "11" on Wednesday, midfielder Tim Harbison will be making his 50th consecutive start.

Make-up Date Announced
Liberty will host High Point on Nov. 8 at Osborne Stadium.  Match time is 1 p.m.  The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 7, but was postponed due to inclement weather and field conditions.

UNC Asheville-Liberty to be Televised
Liberty's home game against UNC Asheville will be televised live on ESPN3 and Liberty Flames Sports Network (LFSN), Saturday.  The telecast will start at noon.
