The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad displayed bumpy results Saturday at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Blacksburg, Va. However, Liberty received a boost of confidence from a pair of doubles competitors.
The doubles tandems of Maria Khval/Emily Groeneveld and Evangeline Crist/Valerie Thong were able to pick up victories in Saturday's competition, sending both pairs to the doubles quarterfinals on Sunday.
Crist and Thong handled Penn State's Taylor Shukow and Katherine Whiteaway with ease in Saturday's competition. Following the Liberty pairing's 8-1 victory over UMBC's Alice Taylor and Hanna Victorsson on Friday, the dynamic duo picked up where they left off, defeating the pair of Nittany Lions by a score of 8-2. Crist and Thong will square off against Virginia's Maci Epstein and Stephanie Nauta in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
The team of Khval and Groeneveld collected their first doubles win of the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regionals Saturday, after being granted a first-round bye on Friday. The Liberty pair successfully defeated Navy's Sam Droop and Noelle Kaufmann by a score of 8-1. Khval and Groeneveld will go toe to toe against George Washington's Grace Egger and Teodora Radosavljevic in Sunday's quarterfinals draw.
"Our doubles tandems were excellent," commented Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "They came onto the court ready to play and were full of energy. They made very few errors, which is almost always the key to victory. I look forward to watching them play again tomorrow."
Despite sending four athletes to the singles main draw, the Lady Flames were unsuccessful in clinching a singles victory.
Liberty's pair of doubles tandems return to action tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Regionals at 9 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
