The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad continued its strong performance at the Hokie Fall Invite at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Lady Flames finished the day 10-2 including seven singles victories and three doubles wins. Liberty has posted an 18-4 overall record for the first two days of the Hokie Fall Invite. The Lady Flames will compete in four of the seven flight finals that they entered into for the tournament, including three singles finals. In doubles competition, the duo of Emily Groeneveld and Valerie Thong defeated James Madison's Dylan Owens and Emily Bradshaw to advance to the Flight B doubles finals tomorrow against the host Virginia Tech's Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar. Liberty's freshman Evangeline Crist continues to display her talent, securing two singles victories en route to her second singles finals matchup in as many tournaments. Crist defeated VCU's Ana Batiri in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 before overcoming Penn State's Liyin Xu 6-0, 6-3. Crist will square off against James Madison's Rachel Nelson in the Flight D Finals. Lauren Mabe advances to the Flight E finals, Sunday following her two victories in Saturday's competition. Mabe defeated Radford's Taylor Fay in straight sets 6-5, 6-5 in the quarterfinals of Flight E. Mabe used her strong quarterfinal performance to push her past Morehead State's Maria Orellana in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Mabe will go toe to toe with James Madison's Cara Wirth in Sunday's final match. To cap off the Lady Flames' strong performance, Mariely Hassey advances to the Flight B singles finals match, squaring off against Virginia Tech's Nandakumar. Hassey earned a hard fought victory over James Madison's Owens, overcoming a second set loss to win in three sets 6-1, 4-6, and 6-2. Hassey maintained her composure, defeating Penn State's Devan McCluskey in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. "We continue to do a good job of finding a way to win while facing adversity," Liberty Women's Head Coach Jeff Maren commented. "I'm very proud of our girls for putting forth such a great effort today." Liberty concludes play tomorrow at the Hokie Fall Invite with doubles competition at 9 a.m., followed by the final round of singles competition.
