Field Hockey to Host Longwood and Appalachian State

The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team concludes its home stretch this week, hosting the Longwood Lancers on Tuesday and NorPac conference foe Appalachian State on Sunday at Liberty Field Hockey Field. Tuesday's contest is slated for 4 p.m. and Sunday's is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

A Glance at Liberty
Liberty enters the week with a 6-4 record (1-0 NorPac), following their weekend sweep of Ohio and No. 11 Louisville Cardinals. In their first contest of the weekend against the Bobcats, the Lady Flames offense exploded for five goals en route to a 5-0 victory, Friday. Sunday's contest was a thrilling victory, with Liberty pulling off the 2-1 upset over the Cardinals. The Lady Flames held Louisville, a team averaging four goals per contest, to just one goal in Sunday's matchup.

Sarah Gipe leads all Liberty scorers with six goals and 14 points. Teammate Ashlee Krulock is second on the team in points (12) with four goals and four assists. Mallory Cuccio surpassed her single season saves record of 43 in Sunday's 2-1 victory. Cuccio now has 47 saves on the season.

A Glance at the Lancers
The Lancers finished the 2013 season with a respectable 10-12 record, before falling in the NorPac Conference Semifinals to No. 1 seed Stanford, 5-0. Longwood made the leap to the Mid-American Conference this year, where they were predicted to finish fifth in the conference standings. The Lancers enter tomorrow's contest with a 4-6 record following their most recent 2-1 overtime victory against Vermont. Tomorrow's contest will be a matchup of old conference foes, who have squared off five times in the last three years.  Liberty holds a 3-2 series advantage over the Lancers, with the most recent contest being a 6-1 victory for the Lady Flames at Liberty Field Hockey Field on Oct. 17, 2013.

A Glance at the Mountaineers
The Mountaineers enter the week with a 2-9 record (0-1 NorPac) following their 6-1 loss against Saint Joseph's. Appalachian State comes into the weekend having dropped five consecutive contests. The Lady Flames and Mountaineers have squared off five times, with Liberty holding a 4-1 series advantage. The Lady Flames have won four consecutive matchups against the Mountaineers, outscoring Appalachian State 26-3 over the four game span. The two teams will square off Sunday, and meet again five days later on Oct. 10 at 3 p.m.

A Look Ahead
Following the conclusion of Sunday's contest, the Lady Flames will hit the road for three consecutive games. Liberty will square off against Appalachian State on Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. Two days later the Lady Flames travel to Durham N.C. to take on their third Top 20 ACC opponent in No. 5 Duke at 1 p.m.
