Liberty will participate in the second of its three fall tournaments next week, when the Flames travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the Shoal Creek Invitational.
The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by UAB alum and 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, will be contested at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club is a par-72, 7,234-yard course and was designed by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus. The course hosted the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship, respectively won by Lee Trevino and Wayne Grady.
The Shoal Creek Invitational, which started in 2005 and ran to 2008, returned as a collegiate event in 2012. Last year, Memphis was one of four teams to finish in red figures, posting a winning score of 22-under par 842 (280-286-276) and finishing six strokes ahead of host UAB's 16-under par 848 (283-273-292).
Liberty finished in sixth place, posting a 2-over par 866 (284-284-298). The Flames' top finisher was graduate Chase Marinell with a 2-under par 214 (71-67-76) for ninth place.
This year's 12-team field includes some of the top tiered programs in the country, starting with defending national champion and last year's No. 1 ranked team Alabama.
Also included in this year's field are (Golfstat rankings): No. 6 UCF, No. 19 UAB, No. 35 Liberty, No. 46 Georgia Southern, No. 51 North Florida, No. 54 Mississippi State and No. 57 Memphis.
The Flames' young golf team will once again have just one player with previous experience at the course. Last year, senior Mathieu Fenasse finished tied for 24th place with a two-over par 218 (72-70-76) at the UAB hosted event.
The remaining four players on head coach Jeff Thomas' lineup next week include junior Harrison Winger and freshmen Adam Eineving, Mitchell Klooz and Isaiah Logue.
The tournament will represent the first start of the season for Winger and the collegiate debut for Klooz. The Flames struggled at their season-opening event, finishing 12th out of 12 teams at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, with an 86-over par 938 (317-307-314).
The Flames' top finisher was Logue, who finished tied for 24th place with a 15-over par 228 (81-75-72). Eineving followed with a 21-over par 234 (79-75-80) for 41st place and Fenasse finished tied for 48th place with a 24-over par 237 (79-80-78). For Logue and Eineving, the event marked their first collegiate tournaments.
The 54-hole event will feature a shotgun start on Monday morning to begin 36 holes of competition. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday to determine this year's Shoal Creek Invitational. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be provided by Golfstat.com.
