The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad played two doubles matches and four singles matches at the Colorado Invitational, Friday afternoon. In their two double matches, the Lady Flames finished 1-1 with the team of Brittany Yang and Maria Khval advancing to the third round of doubles on Saturday. Yang/Khval notched an 8-4 victory over New Mexico's Sharon Coone and Susan Baklini. Liberty finished 4-0 in singles play for the first round of competition. Khval defeated Southern Illinois's Natasha Tomishima in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Khval will play Utah's Sarah Richter in the semifinals of the Gold Draw bracket. Nicola Wellman also picked up a victory in straight sets, defeating Salukis' Gisela Cairo Baza 6-1, 6-0. Wellman will square off against Utah's Victoria Robertson in the semifinals of the Black Draw bracket.
Yang continued her impressive display, picking up a straight sets victory over Southern Illinois's Hannah Wich by scores of 6-1, 6-2. Yang competes in the semifinals of the Ralphie Draw against New Mexico's Baklini. To cap off singles play, Belen Rivera defeated host Colorado's Nuria Ormeno in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-4. Rivera squares off against Emily Olivier of New Mexico in the semifinals of the Silver Draw bracket. "We played aggressively today, giving us an edge," commented Khval. "Our confidence was high, helping us to play well throughout all of our matches." Liberty continues play tomorrow at the Colorado Invitational with singles competition beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the third round of doubles competition.
