Sarah Gipe tallied two goals in Sunday's 7-1 victory over Missouri State.
The Liberty Lady Flames poured on goal after goal en route to a 7-1 victory over the visiting Missouri State Bears, Sunday at Liberty Field Hockey Field. Liberty's seven goals mark the fifth time in program history the Lady Flames have tallied seven or more goals, and the first since defeating Georgetown 7-0, Oct. 20, 2013. With their third straight win, the Lady Flames even their record at 4-4 on the season while the Bears fall to 2-6. Liberty took little time in scoring its first goal when Serena Barr passed the ball across the circle to a wide open Ashlee Krulock who tipped the ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead, just 3:20 into the game. The Lady Flames added the second goal of the game in the 10th minute when Sarah Gipe notched her second goal of the weekend. Teammate Natalie Barr dribbled through defenders and to the Bears' baseline, laying the ball off into the middle of the circle for Gipe. Gipe stood strong and flicked the ball into the back right corner of the net for the 2-0 lead. Liberty extended the lead to 4-0 before the half with two more goals when Hannah Doherty and Alynn Richardson both found their second goals of the season, each assisted by Krulock. Missouri State notched their lone goal when Andrea Codina Soler netted her third goal of the season in the 42nd minute, cutting the lead to three at 4-1. However, the Lady Flames' offense seemed too much for the Bears. Mercedes Cox and Serena Barr scored their first goals of the year just three minutes apart in the 54th and 57th minute to extend the lead to 6-1. In the 63rd minute Gipe found the back of the net for the second time, and her fifth goal in the last four games. Gipe dribbled the ball up the middle of the field before passing the ball off to Nicole Simms entering the circle. Simms fed the ball back to Gipe before the goalie could react, giving Gipe her fifth goal of the season and the fifth multi-goal game of her career. Junior goalie Mallory Cuccio picked up two more saves Sunday, bringing her season total to 39, just four shy of her season best. Liberty returns to action Friday when it hosts the Ohio Bobcats at 3:30 p.m. at Liberty Field Hockey Field. Two days later, the Lady Flames will host the Louisville Cardinals at 1 p.m., the team's second ACC opponent in as many weekends.
