During the month of August, LibertyFlames.com has previewed each position on Liberty's football roster before the Flames open the season on the road at North Carolina on Saturday.
LibertyFlames.com concludes its series today by looking at the Flames' offense, a group that returns eight starters from the 2013 campaign.
Liberty finished last season ranked No. 16 in the country in scoring offense, as the Flames averaged 37.3 points per game. Liberty finished 2013 scoring 447 points, the second-highest, single-season point total in program history.
Liberty used the strong play of running back Desmond Rice (967 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns) to set a program record with 36 rushing touchdowns as a team. However, the Flames will have to replace the running back's numbers in 2014 after he suffered an offseason injury and will sit out the year.
Quarterback Josh Woodrum had the second-best sophomore passing season in program history, throwing for 2,581 yards and 19 touchdowns. Woodrum completed 64.3 percent of his passing attempts (198-of-308), helping Liberty finish 2013 ranked No. 6 in the country in passing efficiency (155.64).
Woodrum's top three targets from last season also return, starting All-Big South wide receiver Darrin Peterson. The rising junior led the team and ranked third in the conference in receiving yards (809), while adding a team-best seven touchdown receptions.
Also returning are senior Gabe Henderson (641 yards, three touchdowns) and sophomore Dante Shells (432 yards, one touchdown).
Finally, the Flames return four out of five starters on the offensive line in Jonathan Burgess, Aharown Campbell, Mitch Hanson and Greg Ray. The group collectively helped Liberty rank No. 11 in the country in third-down conversion percentage (35.2), No. 13 in red zone offense (87.3 percent) and No. 21 in time of possession (32:06).
