Liberty women's soccer senior defender Maddie Boone has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week for games played Aug. 18-24. The announcement was made by the conference earlier this afternoon.
Boone was instrumental in Liberty's 1-0 shutout victory over Old Dominion, as she and the Lady Flames defense allowed just two shots on goal during the contest. Liberty held ODU to a total of 10 shots on the night, setting up a game-winning goal by Crystal Elmers in the 63rd minute. The Lady Flames have now won the past three meetings against the Lady Monarchs.
The honor is Boone's first Big South Defensive Player of the Week nod this season and the first for Liberty in 2014. The Nicholasville, Ky., native previously received the weekly accolade during the 2013 season, as she was named defensive player of the week on Oct. 21 for her performances against VMI and Gardner-Webb.
Liberty makes its 2014 home debut tomorrow night, playing host to UNCG. The Spartans hold a 5-1 lead in the all-time series, but the Lady Flames won the most recent meeting, earning a 1-0 victory off an Alanna Dunkle goal in Greensboro, N.C., last season. The rematch is slated for a 6 p.m. start at Osborne Stadium. The contest will be streamed live on the Big South Network.
