Before Liberty opens up its 2014 preseason football training camp on Thursday, LFSN Game On takes one last look at the Flames' success on the gridiron during the 2013 season.
Liberty finished the year with an 8-4 record, its first eight-win season since 2010. Liberty shared the Big South title with Coastal Carolina, as both programs finished the year with a 4-1 mark in Big South play. For the Flames, it was their sixth conference title in seven seasons.
Liberty led all Big South schools with 16 All-Big South selections (seven first-team selections and nine second-team honorees). The Flames also placed 10 players on the VaSID All-State listing.
Liberty's top individual honoree during the 2013 season was safety Jacob Hagen, who was named an Associated Press All-American (third). The rising senior finished the 2013 season with a career-best 61 tackles (34 solo, 27 assisted), which nearly doubled his career total through his first two seasons with the Flames (76 tackles). He led the Big South and ranked No. 9 in the country in interceptions per game (0.5).
As a team, Liberty finished the season ranked No. 3 in turnover margin (1.30) and red zone defense (66.7 percent), No. 5 in the country in scoring defense (17.6 points allowed per game), No. 6 in team passing efficiency (155.64), No. 9 in total defense (313.9 yards allowed per game) and No. 16 in scoring offense (37.3 points per game).
